the mounties

　極東ブログさん、どうも。カナダテロ大規模テロ未遂の件、今更ですが。

＞共同のニュース全体がロイターのパクリのようなもの

　RCMPやCSIS（カナダ公安情報局）のサイトに３日付の発表がありますから、これを見て書いた可能性もありますね。

　OK bomberとの比較のくだりは、RCMP関連の方に出てきます。アルカイダとの関連はCSISのほうに言及がある。

"they appear to have become adherents of a violent ideology inspired by Al Qaida"

とありますが、インスパイアというのはかなり微妙な表現ですね。しかも、appearだし。まあ、「アルカイダ的なるもの」の裾野は、相当広いんだろうなあ、今や。

＞定訳語も「カナダ連邦警察（RCMP）」と変えたほうがいいぞ、共同とか

　ごもっとも。ただ、外国政府関連の日本語サイトってのも、トリッキーな場合がありますよね。重要な指標の一つではあるのでしょうが。RCMPサイトのAbout欄には、

"The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is the Canadian national police service"

（拙訳：RCMPはカナダの国家警察機構です）

とあって、さらに

"The RCMP is unique in the world since it is a national, federal, provincial and municipal policing body."

（同：RCMPは、国家、連邦、州、市町村の各レベルで警察活動を行う世界的にもユニークな組織です）

という説明が続いており、nationalとfederalの区分が私などにはよくわかりません。個人的には、Mountie＝騎馬、のイメージは残して欲しいなあ、と。

＃余談ですが、上記の会見をしたRCMPのひとが米国のNPRのインタビューを受けてて、「容疑者って何者ですか」「カナダ人です」「カナダ生まれなんすか」「いや、だからカナダ人です。プライバシー保護法の関係で移民かどうかは言えません。過半数はカナダ生まれ、他も長期居住者です」みたいなやりとりがあり、両国のお互いに対する見方が垣間見えて興味深かった。

　もう一点、「新移民だけじゃなく国民まで監視しなくちゃならんというのは大変すね」「いや、監視はしません。犯罪の兆候に常に注意を払っているだけです」というのもあって、国柄というか、sensitivityの違いがあるなあ、という感じがしました。カナダがプライバシー保護の観点から米国への情報提供に懸念を抱いているという話もあるみたいですし。ＥＵでも旅客情報提供でいろいろあったなあ。米国って、個人情報だだもれだし。

　ぼくは、カナダに行くと、なんとなくほっとしたものです。空気がフレンドリーで。米国では、「見た目ガイジン」は潜在テロリスト扱いちゅうところがありますから。そういう時代なんでしょうけどね。
